CSYPN is a not-profit organisation that promotes and encourages a Croatian network amongst students and
young professionals in the UK. CSYPN organises and supports a wide range of activities for our members,
often exclusively or at a discounted rate.
CSYPN events fall into the often overlapping and barely distinguishable categories of Culture, Sport
and Social. Whether you want to watch a Croatian film, see the Croatian football team play, or just meet
people, have a look at our events and see if there is something there for you.
The Royal Society, in collaboration with the International
Trust for Croatian Monumentsand
the Croatian embassy, have arranged an exhibition to celebrate the 300th
anniversary of the birth of the prominent Croatian scientist Rudger Boscovich.
It started on 24 November and lasts until 25 February. Viewing is by
appointment only.
The Croatian embassy and the British-Croatian society are
organising 'Celebrating Dubrovnik', the opening of which is on Friday 2
December. If you wish to attend, details are below. No need to RSVP.
We will combine our monthly CSYPN pub event with this. Essentially
a group will leave at the end of the opening to a nearby pub. So look
out for us at the end.
A
lot of you have been waiting impatiently for this exciting news!
CYPSN Christmas party is back at the POSK (Polish and Social Cultural Centre )
Lowiczanka Restaurant in Hammersmith. Everybody who attended last year, had a
great time there and was happy with the service. The added appeal this year is
a live band!
Considering that Croatia is signing the EU Accession Treaty in Warsaw on
December 19th – this is the place to cheer to that occasion, with a
free glass of vodka.

sa uslugom. Ove godine će izvanrednoj atmosferi doprinijeti i živa muzika!
Dakle, izglancajte plesne cipele!

Our regular pub event takes place on Friday 4 November. We will
be trying somewhere new, the Cittie of Yorke on High Holborn. Nearest

However, hopefully we can follow the score via our various devices and celebrate goals as appropriate!
We
will be meeting at the Tattershall Castle on the Thames this Friday 7
October for our pub event. We are likely to be below deck as it is will
perhaps be a bit chilly.
One or two of us will have something Croatian on us – so look out for red and white when arriving!
We will be there from 7.30PM.
The
Tattershall Castle is a boat/bar moored on the Thames in the middle of
London with amazing views of the London Eye, St Paul's, Westminster and
the South Bank.
The same as last year, we will be having a picnic instead of a pub
event
for August. This will be this Sunday 21st August at 1.30PM in
Hyde Park near the Diana memorial fountain. Familes are welcome. Bring
your own food! We will have Croatian colours with us, so we should be
easy to spot!
Please RSVP to Brian on the committee (brian at csypn.org.uk) so we know who is coming.

June. We will have food, drink and music - all at a venue perfect for

whatever your interest, come along! The rain will not stop the play – we

(And remember, this is where we settle the eternal question: Who is the best Croatian tennis player in London?)
We are pleased to confirm the

of the CSYPN calendar for members - we have (home-made) food, drink,
music, raffle prizes and special guests - all in a prestigious central
London venue.

The British Croatian Society have organised a Croatian jazz
concert (full details below) on 10 June. This is for an excellent cause -
for music therapist Dean Cacija's music therapy projects for veterans,
families and children in Croatia affected by war trauma and Post
traumatic Stress Disorder.
With thanks to Dean (whom some of you will have met at our pub
event on Friday), CSYPN has a discount for the event. If you want to
attend with us, the concessionary price will apply - £15 rather than
£18.

out for red and white when arriving! With luck, it will be warm so we will be on deck for G & T’son the river and if it is chilly inside
with our lagers!
We haven't been to the opera as a group for quite some time.
Sandra Martinovic, a former Committee member of CSYPN, is currently
assistant director to Dioneo's new production of 'The Emperor of
Atlantis'. She's told us she is one of the first assistant female opera
directors from Croatia to work in London.
It would be very nice to go as a CSYPN group to support this project, a
one act opera, and to listen to an opera which has been described as
'powerful'.
Remember we let you know about this brand new event in our last message ?
A wonderful
chance to visit a picturesque double-moated 13th century castle which
was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry the
Eighth. Plus a look round the beautiful and extensive gardens within the
castle grounds.
We've already had a number of responses. Thank you very much.

This week we offer a great opportunity to see a Croatian play at Tristan
Bates Theatre on Friday 11th March. “Woman Bomb” by Ivana Sajko is a
play featuring a female suicide bomber in the last minutes before a
suicide attack, where the bomber reflects upon her actions and the
circumstances that have led her there. It combines real life
documentary, a powerful description of the event and the intimate
thoughts of the author in dialogue with the suicide bomber. This
production is the UK premiere.

It
is with some sadness that we report the passing of prominent Croatian
linguist Dr Branko Franolic on 10 January. As many of you know, he was a
good friend to CSYPN, and a number of you will recall his lecture in
Cambridge back in 2001. CSYPN also co-published his 2008 book on the
Croatian language.
An excellent feature on his life by Marcus Tanner can be seen here: http://bit.ly/fHeS2S

Despite the (current) mild weather, Christmas will soon be upon us. Your esteemed Committee has organised yet another exciting event in an interesting and new venue for you.
This year, we will be at POSK in Hammersmith, the Polish and Social Cultural Centre, in their Lowiczanka Restaurant, one of the flagship Polish restaurants in London.
We take great pleasure in announcing that we have arranged a
screening of the English language documentary ‘Searching for a Storm’ on 30
September at 7PM. It will be the UK premiere.
The documentary, by American director Jack Baric, regards
the indictment of Croatian General Ante Gotovina by the ICTY and considers
whether he is a scapegoat for failed UN policies during the war in former
Yugoslavia. Gotovina was indicted for Operation Storm, which liberated large swathes
of Croatian territory and brought the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina to an end.

Metastases
(Metastaze) (UK Premiere) + short
Genesis, Sunday 25 April, 8.30pm
82
min | Croatia | 2009 | Dir: Branko Schmidt
Four young junkies
without jobs, future or any kind of perspective, spend their time
drinking, fighting, shoplifting, stealing, fanatically cheering for
their local soccer club, and drug smuggling.
Metastases can be
described as Croatian “Generation X” or “Trainspotting”, with it’s
depiction of recent social problems in Zagreb. It explores the
‘illnesses’ that plague modern Croatia in the wake of war, and reflects
the petty hatreds, violence, prejudices and moods hanging over the
country with no cure in sight.
The film is being screened at the
Genesis cinema, details of its location can be found at:
Our monthly pub event will be a little later in April so that we don't meet on Good Friday. We will instead be meeting on Friday the 9th of April in the usual place. We hope to see lots of you there!
We hope to once again put a 10-person crew in this year's Great River Race (www.greatriverrace.co.uk). CSYPN has had crews the last two years and have raised a lot of money for charity, rowing a boat in what is like the London marathon on water and one of London's most colourful and exciting events.
We will be hosting a family summer sports day and barbeque on Saturday 19th June. There will be lots of activities, music and food - including a tennis tournament with prizes, and some indoor options in case it rains.
The sailing weekend has been postponed from the May bank holiday weekend. It will now be taking place in July, with a provisional date of the weekend of the 16th/17th of July. This is yet to be confirmed, but if you are interested please e-mail Edo on the committee (
