CSYPN is a not-profit organisation that promotes and encourages a Croatian network amongst students and
young professionals in the UK. CSYPN organises and supports a wide range of activities for our members,
often exclusively or at a discounted rate.
CSYPN events fall into the often overlapping and barely distinguishable categories of Culture, Sport
and Social. Whether you want to watch a Croatian film, see the Croatian football team play, or just meet
people, have a look at our events and see if there is something there for you.

Metastases
(Metastaze) (UK Premiere) + short
Genesis, Sunday 25 April, 8.30pm
82
min | Croatia | 2009 | Dir: Branko Schmidt
Four young junkies
without jobs, future or any kind of perspective, spend their time
drinking, fighting, shoplifting, stealing, fanatically cheering for
their local soccer club, and drug smuggling.
Metastases can be
described as Croatian “Generation X” or “Trainspotting”, with it’s
depiction of recent social problems in Zagreb. It explores the
‘illnesses’ that plague modern Croatia in the wake of war, and reflects
the petty hatreds, violence, prejudices and moods hanging over the
country with no cure in sight.
The film is being screened at the
Genesis cinema, details of its location can be found at:
Our monthly pub event will be a little later in April so that we don't meet on Good Friday. We will instead be meeting on Friday the 9th of April in the usual place. We hope to see lots of you there!
We hope to once again put a 10-person crew in this year's Great River Race (www.greatriverrace.co.uk). CSYPN has had crews the last two years and have raised a lot of money for charity, rowing a boat in what is like the London marathon on water and one of London's most colourful and exciting events.
We will be hosting a family summer sports day and barbeque on Saturday 19th June. There will be lots of activities, music and food - including a tennis tournament with prizes, and some indoor options in case it rains.
The sailing weekend has been postponed from the May bank holiday weekend. It will now be taking place in July, with a provisional date of the weekend of the 16th/17th of July. This is yet to be confirmed, but if you are interested please e-mail Edo on the committee (

As you may know, a great friend of Croatia passed away at the start of this month. We were very honoured that the Guardian newspaper published the following letter written on behalf of CSYPN.

A big congratulations to our crew who completed the Great River Race at the start of the month! There was lots of singing and sweating as the CSYPN boat raced in lovely sunshine along 21 miles of the Thames. The boat did it in 4 hours 7 minutes.
The next football match with Croatia is on Wednesday October 14th. We play Kazakhstan away. The Famous Three Kings, West Kensington will be showing the game as usual. Kick off is 9.30pm.
What: Croatia vs Kazakhstan World Cup Qualifier When: Wednesday 14th October 9.30pm Where: Famous Three Kings West Kensington (http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/95/956/Famous_3_Kings/West_Kensington) Cost: The pub charges a £3 entry on big match days - and with this you get a bottle of beer. This is something the pub does - we do not have anything to do with that.
Please remember that England play the same day, so the pub can get crowded - it is best to arrive a little early to make sure you get in (England's match is at 8pm on the 14th) Also, some people last time had difficulty finding other CSYPN members: this time, we will have a CSYPN sign so everyone can find each other!

The Blue Elephant Theatre will be showing a play by Croatian playwright Ivor Martinic, 'The Title of the Drama About Ante is Written Here':
"1,280 children were wounded during the Croatian War of Independence. Inspired by the true story of a young boy who lost both his mother and one of his legs following a bomb blast, The title of the drama about Ante is Written Here deals with the relationship between 12-year-old Ante and his father, long-absent during the war where he had served on the front, and their painful readjustment to post-war life, alone together in their grief yet trying to start afresh."
You are cordially invited to the opening of the exihibition, Medjimurski pilovi [Medjimurje Roadside Shrines]
on Tuesday 8th September, 6 to 8pm, at the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia
21 Conway Street
London W1T 6BN
About the Exhibition
In 'Medjimurski pilovi', Damir Klaic depicts Medjimurje roadside religious shrines in a photographic examiniation. In this exhibition, they appear as intimate messages from the folk: from crucifix to crucifix, from praying post to praying post, from Jesus to Mary, from powerful to local saints - all far from chapels and churches but with the same aim to serve as altars of faith.
The artist offers a photo-safari of the Medjimurje terrain, its villages and fields, away from major roads and highways. These photographs point to a local heritage that describes both people and religion.
You know how important these games will be. As usual, we will be watching them in the Famous Three Kings right next to West Kensington tube station. We have also organised a meeting venue for Croatia fans for the England match.
Please click 'read more' for some important information.
CSYPN is organising a tennis
tournament (for those of you whose athletic days are gone, there is
also a barbeque). We held a very successful one last year, and this
event is family and kids friendly. Don't miss it!
Furthermore, if the weather turns bad (which as
we all know never happens here), we have an alternative set of
activities ready.
The Famous Three Kings will be showing this Saturday's 2010 World Cup qualifier between Croatia and Ukraine. I do not need to say how important this match is for us!
As England are playing at the same time the pub may get quite busy. To avoid queuing outside the get in, try to arrive a little earlier. Kick off is at 7:15pm.

Continuing from last year's successful participation in the Great River Race (London's river marathon - http://www.greatriverrace.co.uk/) we have secured a boat for this year's event and once again will be raising money for charity.
We have this year's National Day reception on Friday the 26th of June which will be hosted at a very prestigious central London venue. This is one of the highlights of the CSYPN calendar, so clear your diaries!
This is a ticketed event. For members, we are subsidising the cost of the food and drink, so the price is only £10 (which is less than a round at an average London pub, so this really is good value). Non-members are welcome to attend, but their tickets will be £25.
We look forward to see as many of you as possible there to celebrate National Day.

It's that time of the year when we all review CSYPN's past 12 months (events, membership, money matters, ...), elect a new team to lead the Network, and outline some ideas for the next 12 months.
After the official bit, we'll head to a nearby restaurant to go over these presentations and reports again (yeah, sure), hear the latest gossip and have some fun.
Croatia - World Champion in 2003 and Olympic gold medalist in 1996 and 2004 - has reached the finals of the World Handball Championship!
Our team played some wonderful handball and trashed all of their opponents (nine of them) so far. However, the last game is the one that count! We'll play France on Sunday at 4.30pm.
Our friends at the Famous Three Kings are expecting us on Sunday. Don't miss it!

We are going to see the Turner Prize exhibition at the Tate Britain on 21 November. We will meet at 6.30 and then inspect the exhibits competing for the Turner prize. Afterwards we shall head over to the pub for alcoholic refreshment – we may need it – and discussion, artistic and otherwise. The Morpeth Arms is the nearest pub, and we shall try that.

Next Thursday, 6 November 2008, Dinamo will come to London to play Tottenham in the second game of Group D of the UEFA Cup.
Tottenham players Luka Modric and Vedran Corluka will be up against their old side just months after leaving Dinamo as Hotspurs face their first UEFA Cup game under new manager Harry Redknapp.
Croatian jazz musician/composer, Elvis Stanic, will be performing on guitar in London with a European band ‘Ex Tempore’ during the first week of November.
This includes a performance in the 606 Club on Wednesday 5th November. There is no entry fee, instead the musicians are funded from a Music Charge which is added to the bill at the end of the night, with charges currently on £5.00 per head.
Guys, sponsor us and help the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity (GOSHCC)! It's a great cause and 10 of us will be sweating for 4-5 hours. That must be worth something!
Time Out gives quite a bit of importance to this event and puts it at No. 18 in their "101 Things To Do Before You Leave London" feature. It takes place on 13 September.
It's a rowing equivalent to the London's marathon with a minority running a competitive race, and the rest having fun and raising money for a charity.
CSYPN has managed to secure a boat (very difficult) and, if you would like to join the Croatian ambassador, sing Croatian songs and get a place on the boat, do let us know asap. Boys and girls can both be on the team.
We'll merge our regular pub event with this event.
Following (slightly disappointing) Euro 2008, Croatia starts a new campaign, qualification for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa. On Saturday we play Kazakhstan in Zagreb, followed by our regular customer - England - in Zagreb on Wednesday.
Join us in the Famous Three Kings (F3K) in West Kensington, watch the game, catch up with the latest gossip and have a few drinks with us. If you're coming for the first time, feel free to let us know.
